Mapping North Hobart
Courtyard Commission
November 2014–October 2015
I have always been interested in the relationships between people and place and how these intersect with notions around mapping. I lived in North Hobart for three years; in this work, the North Hobart area is my focus. Some of the work captures moments and some of it tells stories. It is, in a sense, a visual diary and particular layers of colours and forms are chosen to portray what I have documented.
Alan Young is a Hobart-based artist. His work is a cocktail of autobiographical and imagined themes rendered, often playfully, in paint. In 2005 he completed a Master of Fine Arts degree at the Tasmanian College of the Arts, University of Tasmania. Recent exhibitions include: Young and Modern, The Hughes Gallery, Sydney (2013); Upbeat, 146 ArtSpace, Arts Tasmania, Hobart (2012); Two of My Favourite Things, Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, Hobart (2010) and Something I Said, Helen Gory Gallery, Melbourne (2009). Young was awared the Bay of Fires Art Prize, Tasmania (2012) and a prestigious MONA Scholarship (2005/06).
