This year, CAT invites you to end the year and leave your mark through Paper Trail, an interactive zine project.

The year has been a challenging one and we recognise that we have all faced difficult conversations. We want to close out the year with something that brings creativity and connection, and that offers a chance to platform the stories that shape us. This is a small gesture, but we hope it can create a space for everyone to share and connect.

Paper Trail reimagines our traditional end-of-year activity — previously the members’ exhibition and party — with a series of zine-making workshops, as well as an open call and exhibition of zines.

Led by local artists Leigh Rigozzi, Miranda Rogers and Jess Bateman, three hands-on workshops will explore different methods of zine-making and storytelling. The workshops are open to people of all skill levels. Participants will learn how zine-making can capture personal narratives and community voices, and present unique visual perspectives and creative styles.

The workshops and open call will culminate in a week-long exhibition in the CAT gallery, transforming the space into a visual map of local stories, voices and images.

The exhibition will open with a Saturday afternoon, family-friendly event on 14 December, inviting everyone to enjoy a relaxed time with some DIY activities, snacks and a zine swap.

Zines created during the workshops, home, or anywhere, can be submitted for inclusion in the Paper Trail exhibition! Open to anyone in Lutruwita/Tasmania (you do not have to be a CAT Member to submit a zine)

Workshops

Make your own zine through the Paper Trail workshop series! These hands-on workshops are lead by local artists Leigh Rigozzi, Miranda Rogers and Jess Bateman. Come along to as many workshops as you like to experiment with different styles and learn about how each artist approaches zine-making. Participants are invited to submit their zines in the exhibition. Free (registration required). Suitable for people of all experience levels. All essential materials provided.

Zine-making and storytelling with Leigh Rigozzi

10am – 1pm, 8 December

In this workshop, we’ll explore what makes a zine and the different forms they can take. We’ll create our own unique zines to share with others by brainstorming themes, deciding on the stories we want to tell, and focusing on writing and drawing a story from start to finish.

Leigh Rigozzi is an artist based in West Moonah. Through his paintings and drawings, he tells stories of both the everyday and the imaginary.

Zine-making and multimedia collage with Jess Bateman

5.30 – 7.30pm, 9 December

Participants will be guided on how to create their own zine, with a focus on hand-cut collage techniques and combining collage with other multimedia styles. Tools and materials will be provided on the day but please feel free to bring any extra materials you wish to work with.

Jess Bateman is a visual artist living and working in nipaluna/Hobart. Although primarily an oil painter her practice is heavily informed by the use of hand-cut collage making techniques. A regular at local zine fairs, Jess has created several collage based zines both solo and in collaboration with other artists.

Zine-making and fast drawing techniques with Miranda Rogers

5.30 – 7.30pm, 10 December

A fast paced and practical class focusing on using the history of zines to make our art. This workshop will include advice on how to fold and make many types of zines, how to expand an idea into a multipanel comic, using left over materials and art to make zines on the cheap, and how to use fast drawing techniques to get out of your head and make art.

Miranda Rogers has been part of the Hobart zine making community since 2016 and part of the small team that organises our yearly fair since 2021.

“Zines and comic making has become integral to my art practice as a vessel for exploring a concept from different angles. I love working with paper so whatever medium I choose, paper is always the vessel for my stories. Things that inspire my art practice at present: my cat, gardening and memories from childhood.”

Accessibility

Zine workshops are open to all skill and experience levels. The workshops are hands on and may involve techniques such as drawing, using scissors to cut paper and other fine motor skills. CAT staff and lead artists may be able to support you if you need assistance.

The exhibition is mobility accessible. Due to the nature of zines submitted by the public, font and graphic styles are outside of CAT control and may not all be easily accessible.

Please contact CAT if you have any accessibility requirements.

The Paper Trail workshop series is presented in partnership with Youth ARC, Mosaic Support Services and Artosaurus
