Expanded Painting is a collaborative exploration by Maggie Jeffries and Alex Moss, blending traditional painting with digital projection, sound design, and interactive media. The project investigates how projected light and imagery can extend and transform the physical canvas, creating a dynamic interplay between static and moving elements.

Maggie initiates the process by projecting macro photographs of plant structures onto the canvas in a dark room, shaping the initial forms of the painting. Alex then re-photographs the evolving painting, using it as a foundation for generating digital visuals. This iterative exchange led us to develop layered compositions that distinguish foreground from background across both physical and digital realms.

Our process incorporates real-time, interactive elements, including Stable Diffusion-generated imagery and video footage of body movement and nature’s shifting shadows. These inputs dynamically influence the motion and transformation of the projected visuals, blurring the boundaries between painting, technology, and immersive experience. Expanded Painting challenges conventional notions of static art, offering a fluid, evolving work where light, texture, and motion converge.
