Cloth Drawing
Courtyard Commission
November 2018–October 2019
Rosemary O’Rourke focuses on the ritual of drawing, repeating a cross motif in rows and building one upon the other. Courtyard cloth drawing is an extension of the artist’s recent works on paper where the folds of the paper become determining structural elements in the work. O’Rourke has used a similar methodology on the CAT courtyard walls by using existing architectural features; selecting vertical lines made by the corners and horizontal lines determined by the bricks and mortar while also subverting the flatness of the wall to give the illusion of folds.
O’Rourke was awarded a Master of Fine Art from the University of Tasmania, Tasmanian School of Art in 2006. Since this time she has participated in numerous exhibitions including:
Procession, Moonah Arts Centre (2016); Organic intimacy, Stephen McLaughlan Gallery, Melbourne (2014); Felt Presence, Devonport Regional Gallery and Australian tour (2013) and Works on Paper, Sawtooth, Launceston. Awarded residencies include: AIR, Hutchins School, Hobart, (2015); The Australia Council for the Arts, British School of Rome (2005) and Rosamund McCulloch Scholarship, Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris (1999).
