Testing Ground is a compilation of investigative propositions by fourteen Australian and international artists on the role of perception, persona and identity, often in relation to place. The exhibition also tests the composition potential, when assembled, of these diverse individual explorations to disclose insights about the nature of human enquiry. The conceptual and technical conviction evident reveals each work is derived from or inspired by specific practices and paradigms that range beyond western art history.
The artists work with mediums, techniques, sites and equipment in extraordinary ways. Alliances between new media, performance, installation, photography and film provision their modes of deliberation and extend production, giving further dimensionality and feedback towards future work. Most of the artists are involved to various degrees with place as an element in, perhaps an impetus for, some works; yet they are not defined by it.
