CAST presents the first in a series of symposia intended to facilitate information exchange and promote the discussion of ideas that inform current art practice. Join Conceptual exhibition curator Colin Langridge, co-convenor Kylie Johnson, invited speakers and exhibiting artists to consider the legacy of conceptual art.

An awkwardness is often associated with the term ‘Conceptual Art’. The commonplace understanding of the term frequently becomes dislodged from historical meaning and is used as a descriptor for the vast majority of contemporary art.

Invited speakers: Anneke Jaspers is an independent curator and writer based in Sydney. She is a founding member of The Free Association and sits on the editorial board of Runway magazine. Craig Judd divides his time between Sydney and Hobart. He is a curator, art historian, arts writer and commentator, and the Coordinating Curator, Detached Cultural Organisation, Hobart. Brigita Ozolins is an artist, writer, and lecturer at the School of Art, University of Tasmania, Hobart, where she teaches art theory and digital imaging and chairs the Plimsoll Gallery Committee. Exhibiting artists in conversation: Scot Cotterell, Leigh Hobba, Kevin Leong, Anne Mestitz, Lucia Usmiani and Megan Walch.

Questions to be considered include:

• What does the term ‘Conceptual Art’ denote today?
• Has the institutionalisation of Conceptual Art drained it of meaning?
• Is the commodification of Conceptual Art possible?
• Have artists adopted the strategies of Conceptual Art but not the content?
