3 into 1, 2008
Date: 12-Apr-2008 – 11-May-2008
Location: Contemporary Art Tasmania
3 into 1 is an annual exhibition format that features 3 local artists in solo shows held simultaneously at CAST Gallery. The artists of 2008 all share an obsession with pattern.
JUDITH ABELL – IRREPRESSIBLE COMPULSION
Judith Abell gives herself over to her uncontrollable desire to make. Without pausing to wonder why, she uses commonplace materials in a time-consuming process she calls ‘intelligent play’. Inspired by the sensation of touch, Abell’s sculptures are extremely delicate, the parts often just ‘resting’ against one another in gentle connections.
TRACEY COCKBURN – OBLIVION
Tracey Cockburn is a printmaker working with the floral motifs found on old crockery, fabric and wallpapers the artist rescues from the brink of oblivion. Nostalgia for the past and associations with contemporary design are triggered by these large wall pieces that celebrate patterning as something much more than just decoration.
PENNY MALONE – VIRTUALLY NATURAL
This show sees Penny Malone incorporating digital technology for the first time into her textile design practice. Malone embraces a spectrum of new possibilities for designing and manufacturing her previously hand-stenciled fabrics that are richly patterned with motifs she derives from nature. Digital technology is important in the works’ display also, involving four installations of mixed media.
